You can trace back to any IP address (online with a Windows PC using tracert.exe).
You can trace an IP address from internic. You can trace all of the Internic details on a domain owner with a 'whois' check from here.
And (sometimes) get the geographic location for an IP address here.

The very best compression (for faster download) tool is Ulead SmartSaverPro - but if you want to use an online service to speed up your pages, then either
www.netmechanic.com or www.spinwave.com are simple and straighforward sites that will compress your image files.
And if you are looking for text on buttons, try www.cooltext.com or www.flamingtext/com for pretty well everthing you need - simple to use as well.

There are probably thousands of links for free cut and paste scripts. One of the best is wsabstract.com which features scripts, tutorials, and some of the best help forums around.
odd stuff
A list of all those special characters like § or ¥ & £ that don't exist on most keyboards.
Not much of a list right now, but it's building slowly.
